Manure alert to all plotholders!

July 26th, 2008

This is from the current WBDRA newsletter.
I have inserted below an extract from the latest Newsletter from John Harrison of www.Allotment.org.uk
The first item relates to contaminated Manure which any Allotmenteer could have got hold of especially if they use horse manure from stables or even Cow Manure from some of the local farms. The culprit is Aminopyralid.
The second item is the Commons Debate on Allotments which apparently took place on 22nd July. Can’t say I noticed anything in the papers about it or heard about it on the news. Let me know if any of you have any information – I’m e-mailing Anne Milton to see what she knows.
John Harrison writes
The ‘toxic manure’ problem I mentioned in my last
newsletter is worse than I thought, people who thought they
were just having bad luck have realised they have bad muck.
I posted some pictures of the effect, if you want to see
what it does.

Paul Wyman has started an online petition to the prime
minister to ban the use of Aminopyralid and I’d urge you
to sign up. It only takes a minute and we do need to do
something to protect ourselves. You can sign up here:
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Aminopyralid/

The other thing I’d like to bring to your attention is the
upcoming commons debate on allotments. If we can persuade
our MPs to take the shortage of allotments seriously and
provide more plots, then we’ll all benefit.
They won’t be interested unless they think there are votes
to be had. Please take a moment to read this:

Plans affecting our site

July 9th, 2008

  1. The two large oak trees near the lower car park are to be felled. This is because their roots have caused subsidence in houses in Westway.

  2. The brand new fence which has been erected along the lower boundary between Broadacres and the cultivated part of the site is to be taken down and moved back so that it runs along the existing fence line between the houses and garages in Broadacres. The money to build this fence was provided by a grant from the Safer, Greener, Cleaner campaign at the request of the residents of Broadacres. Although this fence was not erected to protect plotholders from yobs – rather to contain them within the site – it has been effective in stopping the trespassing on site by strangers shortcutting through. This sometimes contained a yob element and always un-nerved the women plotholders along the lower path. Moving the fence back to the existing fence line will make it quite ineffective. Most yobs are proficient climbers and can easily use the flat garage roof tops and fences as a springboard. Apart from this there is the waste of money involved and the vexed question of who owns this strip of land!

Check out the plans on the GBC planning website http://www.guildford.gov.uk/DLDC_version_2/ – file number 08/P/01219. You might like to object!

  3. A thorough Health and Safety audit of the site has been done at John’s request. We may be asked to make some minor changes on our plots. Please understand that these are for everyone’s benefit. We have 18 small children on site now (that I know of) – which is great. Now, more than ever, do families need allotments! Children are very inquisitive and parents can not keep them under observation every minute. None of us would like to think of one being hurt if we can help it. Nice drop of Wimbledon rain so good gardening!
